How long is the oak air-dried for?
Our oak mantels are air-dried for at least six years, allowing moisture to reduce gradually and evenly. This traditional method enhances stability and durability and should not be confused with part-seasoned beams, which are only partially dried and can lead to possible shrinkage, warping, and installation issues.
Will the mantel crack or split over time?
As a natural product, solid oak mantel pieces may develop small surface cracks, checks, or movement as it acclimatises to your home. These features are normal and are considered part of the mantel’s authentic rustic character, not defects.
Can I use oak sleepers for fireplace surrounds?
While oak sleepers can be repurposed for a fireplace mantel or surround, they are designed for landscaping, not structural purposes. They are often low-grade oak, containing large knots, checks, or uneven density and decay. For a long-lasting durablilty and for any load-bearing lintels, we only recommend using high-grade structural oak.
Is the oak beam mantel suitable for use above a working fireplace or stove?
Yes, a solid oak beam mantel can be used above a working fireplace or stove provided it is installed at the correct distance from the heat source and in accordance with UK Building Regulations. Always follow recommended clearance distances and consult your installer or stove manufacturer for safety guidance. If the required clearances cannot be met, a non-combustible beam (such as steel, stone, or a fire-rated alternative) should be used instead.
Will the oak beam mantels change colour over time?
Yes. Oak naturally matures and deepens in colour with age and exposure to light. This ageing process enhances the mantel’s warmth and character.
Why is oak superior to other timbers for mantels?
Oak is a dense hardwood with high strength and modulus of elasticity, outperforming softwoods like pine, spruce, fir, and larch. It offers excellent durability, dimensional stability, and a premium grain, making it ideal for fireplace mantels.
What finishes can I apply to my fireplace beam?
The method you choose depends on whether you prefer a rustic oak beam or polished look.
Finishing Options:
Hardwax oils -
Ideal for rustic natural waney edge beams. They enhance the grain, add depth of colour, and provide protection against dirt and light wear.
Oils -
Natural oils penetrate the timber, enriching the warm tones of the oak while preserving its tactile texture.
Waxing -
Wax gives a subtle sheen and helps protect the surface, perfect for mantels where a natural finish is desired.
For wooden mantel beams near a heat source, choose finishes that are heat-resistant and non-toxic.
Application:
Apply finishes in thin, even coats, allowing each layer to dry fully.
Maintain regularly with oil or wax to keep the oak looking rich and prevent it from drying out.
