Green Oak Profiled Pergola Purlins & Rafters FAQs

What are green oak pergola purlins?

Green oak pergola purlins (also called cross members or rafters) are structural roof timbers made from freshly sawn oak. These boards sit on top of the main beams, running perpendicular to them to create the classic open-roof or ladder pattern. They provide strength and support for pergolas, gazebos, pavilions, and other oak-framed garden structures while offering the natural beauty and character that green oak is renowned for.

Are these rafters suitable for gazebos as well as pergolas?

Absolutely. Green oak is one of the most durable timbers for external construction. It offers excellent longevity, weathers naturally over time, and develops an attractive silver-grey patina when left untreated. Our oak gazebo rafters are ideal for gazebos, pergolas, garden pavilions, outdoor seating areas, BBQ shelters and bespoke green oak frame projects.

Will green oak crack or split?

Yes. As green oak naturally dries, it is normal for small surface splits, known as shakes, to appear. These are a natural characteristic of green oak and do not affect the structural integrity of the timber.

With our extensive background in traditional oak framing, we have worked with green oak for over 25 years, from garden gazebos and pergolas to oak-framed car garages and substantial structural oak-framed homes. We know from experience that these natural characteristics are to be expected and part of the timbers ageing process, adding authentic character rather than considered a defect.

Are the rafters supplied with birdsmouth notches?

Our rafters are supplied with either one or both edges profiled but un-notched. This allows you to position and cut the birdsmouth notches yourself to suit your exact pergola or gazebo dimensions, giving you maximum flexibility during installation.

How do I cut birdsmouth notches in freshly sawn oak rafters?

Birdsmouth notches are typically cut once the rafters are positioned on your pergola, allowing you to achieve a precise fit for your beam spacing and roof pitch.
or best results, you'll need:

  • A tape measure and carpenters square
  • A pencil or marking knife
  • A circular saw or handsaw with a sharp blade
  • A sharp wood chisel and mallet to remove the remaining timber
  • Safety equipment, including eye and hearing protection

Start by marking the birdsmouth notch onto the rafter, making sure it matches the roof pitch and beam position. Cut along the marked lines with a circular saw or handsaw, then use a sharp chisel to remove the remaining material and create a clean, flat seating surface.

What rafter tail profiles are available?

Our European green oak pergola rafters are available with a choice of decorative profiled oak rafter ends, allowing you to achieve the perfect finish for your project.
Choose from:

  • Curved
  • Arched
  • Scalloped
  • Chamfered

Each profile is precision-cut to create a traditional, handcrafted appearance that complements both classic and contemporary garden designs.

What is the typical overhang for an oak pergola rafter?

The typical overhang for an oak pergola rafter is usually between 150mm and 300mm beyond the supporting beam, depending on the size, design, and proportions of the structure.
A smaller overhang of around 150–200mm creates a clean, simple appearance, while a larger overhang of 250–300mm or more gives a more traditional oak framing style with greater visual depth and character.

Can I create a sloping roof on my pergola?

Yes. Our green oak pergola rafters are ideal for creating a sloping or lean-to pergola roof. Because each rafter is supplied un-notched, you can cut the birdsmouth notches to suit your exact roof pitch and pergola dimensions.
A sloping pergola roof offers several benefits including; improved rainwater drainage, reduced build-up of leaves and aso allows for easy gutter installation to conserve your rainwater in garden butts or other grey water drainage systems.

Do I need a centre post for my pergola?

Not always. Whether you need a centre post depends on the span of your pergola, the size of the beams, and whether you are adding a roof. Smaller pergolas can often span without a centre post when correctly designed, while larger structures or pergolas supporting heavier roof coverings commonly require additional support particulary if the span is over 3 meters. If you're unsure, we recommend looking at BM TRADA span guidance for hardwoods rafters and always consulting a structural engineer for large projects.

What fixings should I use for a green oak pergola?

We recommend using stainless steel fixings for green oak. The natural tannins in oak can react with standard fixings, causing corrosion and unsightly staining over time. Stainless steel screws, bolts, washers, and brackets provide excellent corrosion resistance and long-term durability for outdoor use.
For a traditional oak-framed appearance, many customers also choose oak dowels (pegs) to secure mortise and tenon joints, while stainless steel fixings and pins can be used where additional structural strength is required.

Should my pergola have wind braces?

Wind braces are an important structural component of a well-designed pergola. Their purpose is to provide lateral stability by resisting racking forces caused by wind loading and movement within the frame.

In traditional green oak framing, wind braces are used to triangulate the structure, creating a stronger and more rigid frame by transferring sideways forces through the posts, beams, and braces. This is particularly important for larger freestanding pergolas, exposed locations, and structures supporting a roof covering where wind loads can be significantly increased.

To complement your pergola structure, we offer pre-curved green oak wind braces, manufactured in our workshop using specialist industrial machinery and crafted by experienced joiners.
