Internal Oak Door Lining Kits FAQs

What are oak dowelling pegs and why are they used?

Oak dowelling pegs are solid cylindrical pieces of oak used to join timber elements in traditional and modern timber framing. They are preferred over metal fixings because they expand and contract with the timber, preventing splitting, corrosion, or staining. They provide a strong, durable connection while preserving the timber’s aesthetic and historic authenticity.

How are oak dowelling pegs installed?

Holes are drilled no larger than the peg diameter through mortise and tenon joints. The peg is lightly sanded to taper before it's driven in using a mallet until it fits snugly. Peg ends are trimmed slightly longer than the joint for a traditional look. Proper installation ensures the joint remains tight while allowing for natural seasonal movement of the timber. Pre-drilling is essential to avoid splitting, especially near board or beam ends.

Do oak dowelling pegs require treatment?

No treatment is necessary. Oak pegs are naturally durable and resistant to decay. If desired, cut or exposed ends can be lightly coated with an exterior wood preservative or timber oil to slow moisture loss, reduce cracking, and preserve colour consistency with surrounding timber.

Can oak pegs be decorative or combined with modern fasteners?

Yes. Exposed oak pegs add a traditional, decorative touch to timber frames. They can also be combined with stainless steel bolts or screws for additional strength in high-stress areas without compromising the timber’s appearance. Peg sizes vary depending on the joint, typically 20–40 mm in diameter, with length slightly longer than the joint thickness for a secure fit.
