Expertly milled from sustainably sourced European & English green oak, these premium cladding boards offer a classic, tapered profile that creates a striking, traditional look. Ideal for both heritage renovations and modern eco-conscious builds.
Sawn feather edge cladding consists of thin boards tapered from one edge to the other, overlapping each other. This profile creates a traditional, weatherproof exterior finish that sheds water efficiently while adding texture and character to your building.
Yes. Oak’s natural characteristics, including its durability and resistance to decay, make it ideal for exterior building cladding. It can withstand outdoor conditions for decades while developing an attractive silver-grey patina if left untreated. With correct installation and good ventilation, oak feathered edge cladding can last 25–50 years or more , making it a durable, low-maintenance option for exterior walls.
Feather edge boards should be fixed vertically with the thin edge overlapping the board beneath. Fix to battens with sufficient ventilation behind the cladding. Ensure each board has an expansion gap at the top and bottom to allow for seasonal movement. Pre-drill holes for screws or nails to prevent splitting, especially near the narrow edge.
Yes. In areas with high rainfall or prevailing winds, it is advisable to increase the lapping of your featheredge boards. This provides extra protection against water ingress, improves weather resistance, and ensures your oak featheredge cladding maintains its durability and aesthetic appeal over time. Proper lapping, combined with correct ventilation and fixings, is key to long-lasting performance in exposed locations.
Yes. A breathable membrane and vertical battens create a ventilated cavity over insulation. This allows air to circulate behind the boards, preventing moisture buildup and prolonging the life of the cladding.
Use stainless steel screws or nails to prevent staining from tannins. Best: Stainless steel wood screws, pre-drilled Alternative: Stainless steel annular ring nails, especially for hidden fixing Avoid: Mild steel or galvanised fixings, as these will corrode and leave marks on the oak.
No treatment is strictly necessary. Oak naturally weathers to a silver-grey colour. If you prefer to retain its warm, natural tone, you can apply UV-resistant oils or stains suitable for exterior timber.
Yes. Oak featheredge cladding complements a wide range of building materials, including Douglas fir, brick, and stone walls, as well as being installed adjacent to roof tiles or other cladding systems. With proper installation and adequate lapping allowances, the boards will perform reliably, providing a durable and visually appealing exterior cladding solution.
It is not recommended to use this cladding internally as green oak contains a high moisture content and will continue to move and shrink as it dries. If used, it is essential its fixed correctly to allow movement and ventilation. You may prefer to check out our cut to size sawn oak boards, which have been kiln-dried for a lower moisture content ideal for interior uses.
